Many potential adverse health effects have been reported due to exposure to PBDEs, i.e., endocrine disruption, reproductive and developmental toxicity, central nervous system effects, and immune system impact [ 1 - 3 ]. PBDEs do not easily degrade in the environment and many of the congeners have relatively long half-lives in the body [ 4 ]. In addition to these concerning PBDE-related effects on human health, another serious worry is their neurotoxicity and potential roles in the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders. A substantial amount of work has been done, surveying the potential association of PBDE exposures with behavioral deficits in humans, as well as in other animal models.
